At the IAEA 2011 General Conference, visitors to the exhibition booth of the Department of Nuclear Science and Applications were given an unusual gift - a baby banana plant. The plantlets had been grown from irradiated banana leaves at the Agency's laboratories, south of Vienna, Austria. In 1993, Bangladesh found its main source of fresh water was contaminated with natural arsenic, resulting in a public health threat impacting millions of people. Water For Santa Elena
Santa Elena is an arid peninsula on Ecuador's Pacific coast and home to 250 000 people. Fresh water was hard to find until the community, the regional university and the IAEA worked together to use isotope techniques to measure the available water. IAEA Officially Opens Safeguards Clean Laboratory Extension
IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano, has opened the IAEA's new Safeguards Clean Laboratory Extension, which is part of the Environmental Sample Laboratory located in Seibersdorf, Austria. The laboratory provides the Department of Safeguards with vastly improved analytical capabilities to support the IAEA's verification activities.
