Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources to be In Focus at IAEA Conference in Abu Dhabi

2013/27

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will organize an international conference focusing on the safety and security of radioactive sources from 27 to 31 October in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The International Conference on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources: Maintaining the Continuous Global Control of Sources Throughout Their Life Cycle will review current practices in ensuring the safety and security of radioactive sources and identify means to maintain the highest level of safety and security.

The Conference is hosted by the United Arab Emirates Government through the country's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

Radioactive sources are extensively used for beneficial purposes around the world in medical, industrial, agricultural, research and educational applications. To avoid accidents or malicious acts using such sources, safety and security measures must be observed throughout their lifecycle - from the moment they are manufactured to their safe disposal.

In September 2003, the IAEA Board of Governors and the IAEA General Conference approved a revised version of the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, and Conference participants will look at achievements, challenges and lessons learned since then.

More than 420 participants, from 100 countries and 13 regional and international organizations, have registered for the Conference.

All parts of the Conference are open to journalists. The opening session, held from 9:00-10:00 on Sunday, 27 October 2013, will feature remarks by IAEA Deputy Director General Denis Flory, who heads the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, and the United Arab Emirates' Ambassador to the IAEA, Hamad Al Kaabi, who serves as the president of the Conference. A News Conference is set to start immediately after the opening session.

The Conference programme and other information are available here.
