IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano today welcomed the unanimous adoption at the 2010 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) of an outcome document containing steps to speed up progress on nuclear disarmament, advance nuclear non-proliferation, promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy and work towards a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.
"I am delighted that the Conference gave full support to all the areas of work of the IAEA that are relevant to the three pillars of the NPT: preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, the promotion of safe and secure use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and nuclear disarmament," Director General Amano said.
"The success of the Conference is particularly important as it can enhance confidence in the nuclear non-proliferation regime, which in turn will provide the IAEA with a stronger basis for its work in all areas."
