The North Estonia Medical Center, which treats about 80% of cancer patients in Estonia, will soon be receiving a new medical linear accelerator from Varian Medical Systems.

A linear accelerator is one of the most commonly used devices in radiotherapy treatments. Currently, the medical centre has two Varian DHX accelerators that are being used to treat up to 140 patients everyday. The addition of a new accelerator will ensure a reduction in patient waiting time and greatly improve the radiotherapy service provided at the medical center.

The procurement of the new linear medical accelerator is a result of co-operation between Estonia and the IAEA through the Agency´s Technical Cooperation Programme. Estonia provided the government cost share contribution for the procurement, increasing the contribution to over US$ 4 million.
