IAEA Board of Governors Conclude December Meeting

On 3 December 2010, the IAEA Board of Governors concluded their final meeting of the year. During the two-day session, the Board considered applications for IAEA membership, the Technical Cooperation programme´s projects and funding, the Medium Term Strategy for 2012-2017, as well as nuclear verification and the nuclear fuel supply.

Following Director General Yukiya Amano´s opening statement, the Board of Governors recommended that the membership applications submitted by the Lao People´s Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Tonga should be approved by the General Conference to be held in September 2011.

The Board approved four new projects and the use of funds, amounting to €80 017 064 for the Technical Cooperation core programme in 2011, of which €586 548 is to be used for new projects and a further €79 430 516 for previously approved, on-going projects.

After taking note of the Agency´s Medium Term Strategy for 2012-2017, the Board then considered the application of safeguards in the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea, the implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement and relevant provisions of United Nations Security Council resolutions in Iran, as well as the implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in Syria.

Upon conclusion of the session, the IAEA Board of Governors authorized the IAEA Director General to establish a reserve of low enriched uranium.
