30 Years - Vienna International Centre

The Vienna International Centre (VIC) celebrates its 30th anniversary this month. The VIC, home to the United Nations family in Vienna, is one of four United Nations headquarters worldwide.

The IAEA is one of 16 UN organisations which make their home in the VIC.

"Vienna is home to members of the UN family working for peace, security and development. They seek to use atoms for peace, reduce poverty through sustainable industrial growth, to ban nuclear testing, bring the benefits of the peaceful uses of outer space to every part of the world, to remove legal obstacles to international trade, and make the world safer from drugs, crime and terrorism," says Antonio Maria Costa, Director General of the United Nations Office at Vienna.

Commonly referred to by the Viennese as "UNO City", the VIC was designed by Austrian architect Johann Staber. Six years after construction began, on 23 August 1979, the Vienna International Centre was handed over to the United Nations and the IAEA.
