States meeting at the IAEA General Conference have adopted a cluster resolution that calls for measures to further strengthen IAEA programmes in major areas of nuclear and radiation safety.
Overall, the resolution urges the IAEA and its Member States to continue to strengthen nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety. It urges continued efforts to increase the effectiveness of national regulatory systems, while underscoring the value of IAEA expert review services and development of guidance for technical and scientific support toward that end, especially in countries looking to start a nuclear power programme. It further singled out efforts for improved management and control of radiation sources, and activities related to the global legal framework for nuclear power.
The resolution additionally addressed nine specific areas:
- the IAEA nuclear safety standards programme;
- nuclear installation safety;
- radiation safety;
- the safety of radioactive waste management;
- safe decommissioning of nuclear facilities and other facilities using radioactive material;
- safety in uranium mining and processing and remediation of contaminated mine sites;
- education and training in nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety;
- safety and security of radiation sources; and
- nuclear and radiological incident and emergency preparedness and response.
