The IAEA Board of Governors has elected the Governor for Algeria, Mrs. Taous Feroukhi, as its Chairman for 2008-2009 (one year mandate) at a meeting held today in Vienna.
Ambassador Feroukhi is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and to the Slovak Republic, and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the Office of the United Nations and the International Organisations in Vienna.
The Ambassadors and Resident Representatives of Finland and Romania were also elected as Vice-Chairmen. They are Ms. Kirsti Kauppi, Governor for Finland, and Mr. Cornel Ferută, Governor for Romania.
Eleven countries were elected last week to serve on the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors for the two-year period 2008-2010. The action was taken by Member States meeting at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna. The newly elected Board members are Afghanistan, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Cuba, Egypt, Malaysia, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Turkey and Uruguay.
Other Member States represented on the IAEA Board during 2008-2009 are Albania, Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Iraq, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Philippines, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, the UK and the USA.
