States Support Measures to Strengthen IAEA Safeguards

The IAEA General Conference has emphasized the importance of the Agency's safeguards system and of continuing steps to reinforce it. Expressing the conviction that safeguards promote greater confidence among States, the Conference encouraged States to conclude comprehensive safeguards agreements and Additional Protocols, which enable more thorough inspections and strengthen the system's capability for detecting undeclared nuclear material and activities.

In a separate resolution, the General Conference called upon all States in the Middle East region to take measures, including confidence-building and verification measures, aimed at establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region. It requested the IAEA's Director General to continue working with the region's States to facilitate the early application of full-scope Agency safeguards to all nuclear activities in the region relevant to preparing model agreements, as a step towards establishing an NWFZ.
